This guide will take you through the core ways in which Mendeley can be used to support your study or research. View our comparison to help you decide the best version for you. There are two versions of the Mendeley app. Mendeley requires an online account and is designed to allow accessing your references anywhere with an internet connection and sharing your library of references with other researchers. You can also attach article PDFs to your references. You can personalise your Mendeley library by adding tags to references or organising your content into groups. It can be used with MS Word to automate the creation of your in-text citations and end-text reference list.

The search function allows you to search any part of the citation, i.e. This is will bring up a search box which will allow you to search your existing citations. To add a citation to your document first make sure you've selected your chosen citation format, then click the Insert Citation button. Here you can search for your preferred style to add it to your style list. Mac users click the 'Choose Citation Style' link in the Add-ins toolbar. Merge the citations! Just select the 3-5 and 6 citation and then go to your citation plugin options in your word processor and select Merge citations. Which would mean remembering which reference they were, selecting all four and adding them in again. Quick solution? Delete the citations and add all four together. However, if you went in to the document and wanted to add another reference in that bundle, it would show up as 3-5 6. For example, if you were citing 3 articles and they were the 3rd, 4th and 5th citations added, they’d probably be added as follows 3-5 (if using a numeric inline citation style format like “Nature Genetics”.).
If you add multiple citations at the same time, the appropriate citation style is used for such situations. That being said, I’d like to touch on a small aspect that many Mendeley citation plugin users are probably unaware of. This release makes it easier to use custom and 3rd-party citation styles, includes an updated plugin for citing your Mendeley documents in Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac and includes a number of improvements to search.
Open Mendeley Desktop and click on Tools, Install MS Word Plugin. A preview release of Mendeley Desktop 1.7 is available. First make sure that all instances of any Microsoft applciations are closed. You will need to install the Mendeley MS Word Plugin before using Mendeley citations in your Word documents.
